Not-Scary Halloween Games for Kids Ages 3 to 8 (Indoor Hunt Ideas)
Halloween is a hard night for younger children. The costumes are loud, the decorations are built to startle, and a lot of the games assume a child who enjoys being scared. Most three to five year olds do not. This guide covers indoor Halloween games that keep the fun of searching for treasure and drop the fright, with one game explained in full: a 100 figure hunt that works from age 3.
What makes a Halloween game not scary for a 3 year old?
Keep the lights on and keep the surprise small. A young child can handle looking for something hidden; what they cannot handle is something jumping out at them. The three things that turn a game frightening are darkness, sudden noise and masks. Remove those and you still have everything that makes Halloween fun: costumes, a treat at the end, and the feeling of searching for something.
The other rule is that the child needs to win. Games with a scary forfeit stop being play. The games below have no losing move, which is why they work down to age 3.
Which Halloween games work without the fright?
Five games cover a whole party for ages 3 to 8, and none of them needs the lights off:
- Pumpkin bowling. Six plastic cups with ghost faces drawn on, one small pumpkin to roll. Two minutes to set up.
- Mummy wrap. Teams of two, one roll of toilet paper each, 3 minutes on the clock. The children being wrapped laugh more than the ones wrapping.
- Costume freeze dance. Music on, music off, everyone freezes in character. No one is ever out; the point is the poses.
- Feel the pumpkin. Let the children scoop a pumpkin with their hands in full light. Slimy is funny when you can see what it is.
- The Halloween hunt. Hide 100 tiny numbered figures among the decorations. It is the calm game of the afternoon, and the one the rest of this guide explains.
How does a hunt game work as a Halloween activity?
You hide 100 tiny numbered figures around a room, the children find them, and a tracking sheet tells everyone which numbers are still missing. Each figure is about 1.6 cm, so a normal living room holds all 100 without looking crowded. The rules take one minute to explain, and the full version is on our how to play page.
For Halloween, hide them among the decorations instead of the usual shelves and cushions. A figure inside a plastic pumpkin, one behind a paper bat, one in the folds of a fake cobweb. The decorations do the theming and the game stays the same.

Where do you hide 100 tiny figures indoors?
Plan about 10 to 15 hiding zones and spread the figures across them rather than placing each one separately. That keeps the setup to about ten minutes. Zones that work well in October: a bowl of sweets, the rim of a carved pumpkin, the branches of an autumn table arrangement, inside shoes by the door, a fruit bowl, the spines of books on a low shelf.
Set a height rule before you start. For ages 3 to 5, leave the figures in the open at eye level. For children of 6 or older, use trickier corners to make the search last longer. Nothing goes behind anything heavy.
How long does a Halloween hunt take?
Active hunting runs about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on how well you hide the figures. For a party it is worth running a second round: hide everything again while the children eat, and change one rule. The second round is where the tracking sheet earns its place, because the children call out the numbers they already have and hunt only for the gaps.
How many children can play with one set?
One set of 100 is enough for 8 to 10 children. Each set includes 4 tracking sheets, so up to four children can keep their own score, and a bigger group splits into teams. In a mixed-age group the numbers do the balancing: younger children search for any figure at all, while older ones hunt specific numbers, which is a slower and more deliberate game.
If you want each team to have its own colour, the 300 piece Mega Hunt Pack gives you ducks for one team, turtles for another and bunnies for the third, which removes every argument about who found what. For the rest of the afternoon, our step by step party guide has a running order you can borrow, and the same setup works at school, as we explain in our classroom scavenger hunt guide.

Is a hunt game safe for young children?
The figures are made for ages 3 and up and printed in plant-based PLA, which is non-toxic and odorless. At about 1.6 cm they are small parts, so keep them away from children under 3 and keep an adult in the room. The tracking sheet helps at tidy-up time too: count the 100 back into the pouch and you know none are left under the sofa. We go through the material and the age guidance in our guide on whether 3D printed toys are safe for kids.
When should you order for Halloween?
Order by 16 October for a 31 October party. We print each set to order in Coimbra, Portugal (EU) and ship within 1 business day. Delivery then takes 3 to 5 days within Portugal and 5 to 7 days to the rest of Europe, so that date leaves a comfortable margin. Returns run 30 days, which covers the whole month if the set turns out not to suit your group.
